The Al Kahn Robeson County Bicentennial Collection
Summary
Between 1976-1992, local radio personality, Al Kahn, collected a series of short anecdotes that reflect the history of Robeson County around the time of its bicentennial. The stories, all around one minute in length, discuss well-known legends like Henry Berry Lowry to lesser-known stories like that of J. H. Hayeswood, a local pastor who also founded the Redstone Academy, a school for Black children in the community in 1903. Al Kahn (August 23, 1926 - November 13, 2020) ran WAGR, a full service local radio station out of Lumberton, North Carolina from 1957 until 1992 when he retired. This collection was donated in his name by his son, Jeffrey Kahn.
