Biographical / Historical

This collection houses material related to the life and accomplishments of Adolph L. Dial. Dial was born December 12, 1922 in Prospect, North Carolina. Upon graduating from University of North Carolina Pembroke with a degree in social studies, Dial enlisted in the United States Army and completed a tour of duty in the European Theater of World War II. Upon completeing this tour, Dial graduated from Boston University with a master's degree and advanced certificate in social studies. Upon his hiring at UNCP in 1958, Dial would create the first American Indian Studies program in the Southeast. Additionally, Dial served in the House of Representatives for one term. Dial devoted his career to publicizing the history of the Lumbee tribe and the tribe's importance in North Carolina history. Dial passed away on December 24, 1995.
