Biographical / Historical
Wesley D. White, also known as Wes Taukchiray, born 1948, is an ethnohistorian and author who has published many works relating to American Indians of the American southeast. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, where many of his publications are housed, in 1969 with a B.A. in anthropology and a minor in history. According to the Smithsonian Institute, where more of his research is housed, Wes worked as a private researcher and genealogist from 1972-1982 before employed by the Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA) and soon became the main researcher for the Indian Law Unit of the Lumbee River Legal Services (1982), during his time with the LRDA, Wes assisted in writing the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina's petition for federal recognition. In 1988, he changed his last name to Taukchiray, which means "white" in the Catawba language.
The Wes Taukchiray Research on Southeast American Indians Collection contains approximately five linear feet of his work on various tribes, predominantly in the southeast.
