Phillip Austin “Rip” Roberts (1894–1953) was born July 24, 1894 in Red Springs, NC and died March 3, 1953 in Lumberton, NC. He graduated from the Agricultural and Mechanical College at Raleigh (NC A&T) in 1916. He came to Robeson County before 1938 as a civil engineer and became the engineer for the City of Lumberton. He left in 1949 to become the City Manager of Gastonia, NC. He was a Mason, a member of the VFW and American Legion, and was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton, NC. The collection was donated to the library by Koonce, Noble & Associates, Inc. engineers of Lumberton via president and owner Lillian S. Koonce. The collection contains maps, architectural drawings, and other engineer's files from Robeson and nearby counties from the office Phillip Austin Roberts, engineer. The dates of the included materials range from 1906-1982.
The Phillip Austin Roberts engineering collection will serve the needs of many researchers. American Indian Studies and history scholars will find information about the county and it's history, geology and geography scholars will find topographic and flood zone maps , public administration and engineering scholars will find public planning information available, and genealogists can research family lands.
